Stay safe in the kitchen (easy read)

The kitchen is a great place for kids.
BUT it can be dangerous.

  1. You could get into trouble.

Getting ready

* Ask if you can use the kitchen. getting everything ready
* Ask what food you can have.
* Ask an adult or older person for help.
* Find out what you need.
* Get everything ready.

Keep yourself safe

kids in the kitchen * Get an adult to show you how to use the oven, microwave and cook top.
* Use a dry potholder to hold hot pots.
* Use a heatproof stand to put hot pans and pots on.
* Use small, sharp knives - they work better.
* Point all pan handles away from the front of the stove.
* Ask an adult to pour hot water into or out of a pan or kettle.
* Use a timer so that you don't cook things too long (or forget them!)
* Turn everything off when you've finished cooking.

Keep germs away

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before you start.
  • Use a clean chopping board for cutting.
  • Make sure that all bowls, cake tins and tools are clean before you start.
  • Keep the bench top clean.
  • Don't let the cat or the dog 'help' you!

Clean up

Clean up * Clean up as you go along - even if you've got a dishwasher.
* Keep your clothes clean.
* Sweep the floor.
* Clean the benches.
* Wash up and wash your hands.
