IUD stands for Intra-Uterine Device. It is a small device that is placed inside the uterus (womb) to prevent pregnancy. IUDs are very effective, but may not be the best choice for contraception if you have not had a child. You need to have a check up with your doctor or a sexual health clinic to find out if an IUD would be suitable for you.

IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

For information about IUDs have a look at the SHine SA fact sheet Intra-uterine devices (IUD)
