Do people who self-harm just want attention?
05 Nov 2012
There are many myths about self-harm. Self-harm is where someone deliberately hurts themselves to deal with strong emotions and stress.
One myth is that people who self-harm do it for attention. Research suggests that about two thirds of young people who self-harm don't even tell anyone - so they can't be looking for attention.
Another myth is that people who self-harm do it because they have a mental illness - but in fact many young people who self-harm don't have a mental illness.
One more myth is that people who self-harm do it because they want to commit suicide. This is also false - most self-harmers do not attempt suicide.
