How much is too much caffeine?

A moderate amount of caffeine can give you an energy boost and improve your mental performance throughout the day. But too much caffeine can have a negative effect on your health.

The American Dietetic Association recommends no more than 300mg of caffeine a day, which is what you'd get from 2 or 3 cups of coffee. Of course, you can get caffeine from other sources, like sports drinks, soft drinks, chocolate bars, iced tea, etc.

If you consume too much caffeine, you may get some of these problems:

  • You feel flat and lacking in energy when the effects of caffeine wear off, eg. if you skip your regular afternoon coffee or caffeinated beverage.
  • You find it hard to get to sleep or stay asleep.
  • You suffer from heartburn.
  • You feel anxious and jittery, and perhaps get palpitations (a fluttering of the heart's rhythm).
